An Abundance of Titles – West Auckland Regional Newspapers Unravelled

There are very few New Zealand digitised newspapers covering the 1950s onwards, although this is gradually changing, as shown by the Preserving Local History & Educational Trust’s stable of mid-20th century titles. When they can be found by researchers, there is eager searching for historical and genealogical content, and gratitude that they are now available.

The greater Auckland region has supported hundreds of newspapers since the 1860s, some lasting no more than an issue and others still running today. By 1960, there were around 30 community newspapers in the area that would become Auckland, catering to a population of about 500,000. A few suburbs even supported multiple papers that catered to specific interest groups. Auckland Council Libraries and its predecessors have done their best to collect as many of these newspapers as possible and unravel their intricate relationships.

The latest ingest of titles by the Trust includes those digitised as part of a collaboration with Auckland Council Libraries which has provided the physical copies for a variety of West Auckland newspaper titles, largely covering the 1940s-1960s. These papers have been digitised by NZMS. This work is supported by an agreement with Stuff Ltd that allows the digitised papers to be freely available through the Trust’s Recollect site, which is word searchable, and, in time, these papers will be available via the National Library of New Zealand’s Papers Past website.

There is an abundance of titles. Their genealogy is complicated and best unravelled with the help of the resources produced by Auckland Council Libraries to understand what was where and when, and how titles morphed and changed over the years. Auckland Council Libraries  have taken a genealogical approach, very successfully, and produced a guide linking all the various titles that changed their name, geographic coverage, and often publisher. “Auckland regional newspapers family trees [LHE – 062]” is available through their website at https://kura.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz/digital/collection/localhistory/id/9056

The charts in this document use a family tree approach to visualise relationships between titles, showing lines of descent, name changes, dates of publication, and direct or indirect associations between titles. Focussing primarily on the historical Auckland Region, there are also charts of newspaper titles from Northland, and the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and King Country, half of the former Franklin County, as the newspapers published in these areas have historic ties with those published in Auckland.

A recent Facebook post by Auckland Libraries Research (https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16tvN526ac) adds to the guide, detailing a breakdown of the genealogies of the main protagonists - District Newspapers Ltd and Suburban Publishers – as they vied for pre-eminence in the West Auckland newspaper scene. The post includes a plea for copies that fill the gaps, commonly found with smaller titles, as few runs have survived intact. The search for stray issues is on!

West Auckland newspapers are a complicated beast. To quote the Facebook post

“There are two families of West Auckland newspapers that were digitised: those by District Newspapers Ltd and Suburban Publishers Ltd. The oldest of District Newspapers’ titles is the New Lynn News, which began in December 1948. The Avondale Advance and Blockhouse Bay Beacon is the other early title, which began in August 1953. We’re missing the first year but have a complete set from November 1954. This and the News merged to become The Western Suburbs News in September 1962, which in turn became the News-Leader in January 1963.

“We have every issue in these series. The same cannot be said for the New Zealand Newspapers Ltd-owned Southwestern Leader, which ran an aggressive campaign from September 1962 to January 1963, to drive District Newspapers out of business. In the end, the Leader merged with the News and the combined title became the Western Leader in October 1963. Unfortunately, we only have 7 out of 19 issues of the Southwestern Leader, so if you know of a source for the missing ones, please let us know!

“The Suburban Publishers Ltd family begins with the West Coast Gazette and its successor, the Waitakere Gazette, which started in March 1949. The first two years of this title are missing but we have most of its remaining run from 1951 through 1966, minus a few issues here and there (RIP most of 1957). The Henderson Independent appeared in June 1960 but only lasted nine months before it was acquired by Suburban Publishers and rebranded as the Henderson Gazette. All of the Gazette is digitised but we only have 3 out of 34 issues of the Independent. The Henderson Gazette merged into the Waitakere Gazette and then spun off as the West Auckland Press in February 1962. While a complete run of this to April 1966 has been digitised, the same cannot be said for the Waitakere Gazette and West Auckland Press’s successor, the West Auckland Gazette. Several issues are missing including almost half of 1968. The Gazette merged into the Western Leader in July 1968. The Western Leader is currently available on microfilm at Research Central on Level 2 of the Central City Library.”

The passion behind the press – the first issue of the Southwestern Leader.
