Kapi-Mana News Joins the Your Stories Collection

Kapi - Mana News 26 April 1967

The Preserving Local History & Educational Trust is delighted to announce that editions of the Kapi-Mana News from January 1967 to May 1970 are now available through our Recollect site.

For decades, the Kapi-Mana News was the voice of the Porirua region. First published on 9 November 1949 by Paremata resident Gladstone Hill, the newspaper took its name from the stretch of coastline between Kāpiti and Mana Islands, while also reporting on the communities of Porirua, Tawa and the surrounding districts.

Like many community newspapers, the Kapi-Mana News focused on the stories that mattered most to local people. Council decisions, school events, sporting results, community organisations, business news and neighbourhood issues all found a place in its pages. Together they provide a remarkable record of everyday life during a period of rapid growth for the Wellington region.

Over time, the newspaper became one of New Zealand's leading community publications, winning Best Community Newspaper at the Canon Media Awards in 2013 and 2016, while also being a finalist in 2014 and 2015.

The newly digitised editions capture an era when Porirua was expanding rapidly, preserving stories that might otherwise have been lost to time. They provide an invaluable resource for family historians, students, researchers and anyone interested in understanding how local communities have evolved.

This digitisation has been made possible through a partnership between the Preserving Local History & Educational Trust and Porirua City Libraries, with the support of Stuff Ltd, the copyright holder.

Every newspaper we preserve is another piece of New Zealand's history safeguarded for future generations.

The Kapi-Mana News is now available to explore on Recollect.
